Camera and Clay is a tour through Helen Hooker O’Malley’s artwork, primarily her photography and sculpture. This prolific artist’s work spanned much of the 20th century. The documentary investigation of O’Malley is supported by archival interviews with Helen, her family, fellow artists, and art historians as well as sweeping views of her work throughout. This program seeks to illuminate a uniquely powerful female artist with musical galleries, excerpts from her story, and critical commentary.
Helen Hooker O’Malley, was a sculptor who took beautiful photographs, painted, sketched and built set designs. She did this all while collecting art and supporting other artists. She was both wealthy and beautiful, and as a former junior national tennis champion, she was extremely athletic.
Married and divorced from Irish revolutionary and author Ernie O’Malley, she would remain captivated by the Irish chapters of her life, and the character of the Irish people, for the rest of her days. She explored this lasting fascination with O’Malley and Ireland in her work.
