Access for All Community Day | February 2024

February 17 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

We are excited to offer Free Admission all day once a month, thanks to generous support provided by Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.

The New Britain Museum of American Art proudly exhibits artworks that capture the dynamic and evolving narrative of American art. Visit the Museum on Saturday, February 17, as we host local artists and educators to help us celebrate festivities surrounding Carnival. Learn how the music, dances, and artmaking have traveled across different regions and how they are continued and passed along to future generations in America.

Schedule:

11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. | Haitian mask making workshop

  • This workshop will be led by multimedia artist Ronald Jean-Gilles. Inspired by his memories of growing up in Haiti, Mr. Jean-Gilles will introduce visitors to mask making and celebrations surrounding Carnival.

11:15 a.m.-12 p.m. | Dejavé Dance Company

  • Featuring 20-25 young dancers, this performance will highlight how traditions are shared and continued with younger generations.

12:15-12:45 p.m. | Nzinga’s Daughters

  • This performance will show how traditions have crossed oceans, and it will foster appreciation for how music and traditions from the African diaspora are practiced and shared.

1-1:45 p.m. | The Hartford Dance Collective

  • The Dance Collective will conduct a workshop in which participants are encouraged to respond to art through movement.

2-3 p.m. | Dave Giardina Ensemble

  • Dave Giardina and his band will perform Brazilian Carnival music.
