Design in Mind is a series of documentaries produced by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) that provides a behind-the-scenes look into the work of famous architects and artists who are influenced by classical design traditions.

The latest entry in the series, On Location with James Ivory, explores the life and work of Oscar-winning filmmaker James Ivory. Over the course of two days, Ivory sat down with the ICAA to discuss his films, his love of architecture, and the importance of place. Additionally, the ICAA was granted unlimited access to Ivory’s remarkable Hudson Valley home, where he has lived for over 40 years.
Ivory leads viewers on a tour of his home, explaining the history of the 19th-century building, showcasing props from his films, and taking viewers down to the barn where many Merchant Ivory films were edited.

Featuring footage from this exclusive tour, as well as scenes from his films and a selection of never-before-published photographs from his personal collection, Design in Mind: On Location with James Ivory is an intimate look at how Ivory’s life and work have been influenced by the art and architecture he surrounds himself with.
About James Ivory
James Ivory is a film director, producer, and screenwriter who formed Merchant Ivory Productions in 1961 with the late Ismail Merchant, his partner of 44 years. Ivory produced films across Europe, India, and North America, and is perhaps best known for award-winning literary adaptations from writers like E.M. Forster (A Room with a View, Maurice), Henry James (The Europeans, The Golden Bowl), and Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day). Merchant Ivory films have won six Academy Awards, with Ivory himself receiving Best Director nominations for A Room with a View (1985), Howards End (1992), and The Remains of the Day (1993). He recently won the Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award for Call Me by Your Name (2017).
