Joey Kasperzyk (G) – Hillhouse-New Haven Boys Basketball

The Academics won their state record 24th CIAC Basketball championship Saturday in a 78-58 romp of East Hartford. The senior led his team with 19 points, helping Hillhouse secure its second consecutive state title. Also, during Wednesday’s semifinal win over East Catholic-Manchester, Joey had 10 points including No. 1000 for his career.

Isaiah Gaiter (F) – Sacred Heart-Waterbury Boys Basketball

Junior Isaiah Gaiter, a transfer student from Xavier-Middletown, helped the Hearts to a fourth straight state title Sunday in a 75-53 disposal of Notre-Dame Fairfield. Gaiter collected 24 points and 11 rebounds in his first championship game with the Hearts. Gaiter scored 16 points in the Monday’s quarterfinal vs. Windsor and 23 points in the semis vs. Middletown. Sacred Heart has won 83 consecutive games against in-state competition.

Dutreil Contavio (F) – Trinity Catholic-Stamford Boys Basketball

The 6’6” Junior did everything he could this week to ensure that Trinity Catholic would win a seventh state title and they did, 61-52 over Westbrook Saturday. He had 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocks in the final, but his earlier round performances last week secured his nomination. Contavio had back-to-back triple-doubles in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the CIAC tournament: 23 points, 16 rebounds, and 12 blocks against SMSA Monday, along with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 blocks Thursday vs. Waterbury Career (Scott Ericson, Stamford Advocate).

Emily Briggs (G) – Canton Girls Basketball

The 5’11” senior guard scored 110 points in five CIAC tournament games (22 points per game). The Canton Warriors beat Thomaston in the CIAC Class S Final for the second-straight year. Briggs had 24 points and 12 rebounds in the school’s second Girls Basketball state championship victory.

India Pagan (C) – New London Girls Basketball

After New London won its second state title in four years, head coach Holly Misto said the team made an adjustment at the half to get the senior the ball. Pagan came out of the locker room and scored seven consecutive points for her team to help extend New London’s lead. It would help the Whalers to their second state championship in four years. New London knocked off Trumbull 42-36 in a battle between both teams who were voted a consensus No. 1 in the state twice this year. Pagan put up 18 points and 11 rebounds. She had 17 points and 21 rebounds in the CIAC Class LL semifinals vs. Enfield.

Nate DeLuca (F) – Woodstock Academy Boys Ice Hockey

The senior had a hat-trick to help Woodstock Academy to its first-ever CIAC Ice Hockey championship—the varsity program began when DeLuca was a freshman. The Centaurs knocked off Hall/Southington 7-3 Saturday. DeLuca had three goals as well in the semifinal. In total, Nate DeLuca finished the season with 40 goals.
