Nursing homes in Connecticut will no longer be automatically shielded from lawsuits over deaths due to COVID-19. At his coronavirus press briefing Monday, Gov. Ned Lamont announced he will end the executive order on nursing home immunity on March 1. Lamont said the state is in a much different place than it was last spring. “COVID was hitting us hard,” he said. “We were bringing in a lot of retired nurses and others who were there to help out in hospitals, to help out in nursing homes, trying to keep up with something we were learning about every day. And at that point it was unfair, we thought, to hold people legally accountable for a situation that was so fast evolving.” Lamont also said that visitation in nursing homes could resume in March if the infection rate continues to decline and vaccination rates continue to increase.
