PATIENCE

March 28 @ 2:00 pm

What’s got a love triangle, jealous soldiers, and lovesick maidens hooked on terrible poetry?  Gilbert & Sullivan’s Patience.  A rollicking satire on aestheticism, Patience shows us that starry-eyed fans of today’s heartthrobs aren’t much different from the poet-groupies in Victorian England.

In Victorian England, a group of women have become swept up in the aesthetic movement. Beguiled and enchanted by it they have turned their attentions and their affections to the local poet, Reginald Bunthorne, and rejected the attentions of the manly soldiers to whom they had been previously engaged.    Bunthorne does not care for any of the women and has his sights set on Patience, the comely village milkmaid.  But Patience does not understand why the ladies are so smitten with him and swoon at his every word.  She is not attracted to or interested in him and thinks his poetry and medieval affectations are complete nonsense.  However Bunthorne is not the only eligible poet in town  Enter aesthete and poet, Archibald Grosvenor, who we learn was Patience’s earliest play fellow.  He professes his love for her and proposes marriage.   But when Grosvenor confesses to her that  all consider him to be perfection itself, and that he is sought after by every women he meets, Patience, having been told that true love is unselfish, decides they cannot marr Archibald, since marrying him would be to deny all others of his beauty and perfection and be the epitome of selfishness.

Leave it to W.S. Gilbert to find a way to untangle this seemingly intractable situation, reunite couples, and restore order and common sense to the realm.  Full of Gilberts clever lyrics and Sullivans brilliant music,  this sparkling show is not to be missed.
