May 2023: Woodbury CT: A multi-media gallery show “We Are Here Now Hidden in Plain Sight 1978-2023” is coming to the Studio Hill Gallery, Woodbury CT.
Curated and hosted by filmmaker Nancy August, this show celebrates one of the most important districts in the history of American arts and culture: the East Village of Manhattan.
Emblematic of the counterculture, radical political and social constructs and boundary traversing free thought, New York City’s hallowed East Village built its unique aura as an eclectic hub of creativity which affected a global reach that continues to reverberate.
A veritable valley in the Manhattan skyline, the neighborhood (east of the Bowery and 3rd Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south) which was once home to icons of artistic innovation spanning Allen Ginsburg, Lou Reed, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Norman Mailer, Keith Haring, and Sonny Rollins to cite a very, very select few have changed dramatically in the 21st Century.
Recent realities which have rendered the East Village a quaint, nostalgic, habitat of its previous imaginative self.
Not so fast! Nancy August discovered, there remains an exclusive, tight-knit, and most productive collective that refuses to go quietly into the redeveloped night.
And they’re coming to the Studio Hill Gallery!
Host/curator Nancy August brings together some of the most iconic East Village artists and photographers for five weeks of sound and vision with a diverse array of presentations at the Studio Hill Gallery on five consecutive weekends commencing 6 May 2023 through 3 June 2023.
Participating artists and photographers include Walter Steding, Julius Klein, Christopher Hart Chambers, Ben Keller, Rodney Patterson, Linus Coraggio, JOff WilsOn, Daniel Root, Brian Rose, Peter Bennet, Vincent Giarrano, Raken Leaves, Maggie Wrigley, Chris Parker, Noble Dre, Puma Pearl, SoulCake, Taryn Nycek, Angel Quinonez, and Ross Bennet Lewis.
